Social media recap for week ending May 7, 2025
Bluesky
The Wikipedia app has a bug that occasionally causes an article to be displayed with the cover image from your previous search. I hope they never fix it.

I can't remember the last time (or a previous time, for that matter) I laughed out loud at a "Crankshaft" strip (this is not a statement of pride…just a statement of fact). But I laughed at this one. It's a lame pun, but he COMMITS TO THE BIT. www.gocomics.com/crankshaft/2...

I observe the Star Wars Day/May The Fourth holiday like every post-Millennial fan who was raised Catholic: All day long, on all of my social media feeds, whenever I see "May the Force be with you," I automatically mumble "...and also with you." (1/2)

In 2001, The Holy See changed the congregation's response to the priest's "May the Lord be with you" during Mass from "…and also with you" to "...and with your spirit." It's closer to the original Latin. Very appropriate for May the Fourth. Fights over "what's canon?" are central to fandom culture.

I keep Star Wars Day in my heart all year-round. Or at least on my bike gear.

Someone took my local library's ENTIRE STAR WARS SAGA (all nine features, on Blu-ray) off the shelf and snuck them into the "movies for sale, $1 each" section. I rescued them using the same bravery and righteous values with which Leia, Luke and Lando rescued Han from Jabba the Hutt. (1/)

I delivered them to the front desk. "I'd take them off your hands," I said. "But I'm certain these weren't supposed to be there." The librarians were dumbfounded and astonished. "_Thank you,_ on behalf of the library," they said. I felt like I'd received a medal for my valor in the Battle of Yavin.

(What was the scheme? The media sale is self-service, cash only. Maybe someone thought sneaking the library's copies into the sale and "buying" them later would look less sus than directly stealing them. But don't the cases have antitheft tags? Perhaps it was merely an act of chaos for chaos' sake.)

I promise to stop yammering about how happy I am about last week's scripting sessions. It's just that this was the first time I used one of those scripts for real, instead of in testing. A text file of links and headlines, grouped by topic, transformed instantly into a nice, blog-ready HTML block:

(As I said last week: I've been using AppleScript for literal decades and the thrill of a script that automates a complicated manual process never gets old.)

Trump LIVID over selection of new Pope Rails against College of Cardinals for not picking from the list of Fox News and Newsmax contributors that he sent over, despite the President making it totally clear that these were the only Popes that he would sign off on
