Like the 20,000-voice chorus that assembled in a specially constructed pavilion in Copley Square in 1869 to celebrate the arrival of post-Civil War peace, perhaps this tradition is destined to be looked back upon, 100 years later, with a mixture of disbelief and profound admiration for the ambitious genius of a long-gone era.
