I feel like EMI’s taking the same marketing approach that Microsoft uses when selling Windows.

“I’d like the new Beatles albums, please.”

“Right. Would that be the individual discs, or the boxed set?”

“Umm…the boxed set, I suppose.”

“Fine. We have that available in Mono mix or stereo.”

“There’s a Mono edition?”

“[highly technical explanation of why there are mono editions of albums that are also available in true stereo]”

“I guess I’ll take the stereo edition. Oh, and which one of these albums has ‘Hey, Jude’?”

“That’s not included. You’ll need to buy ‘Past Masters’ as an add-on.”

I’m pretty sure I need to read a good Beatles biography. George Harrison released a triple-album after the breakup, but he had an excuse: he’d been only allowed one song per side, max, per Beatles album. The White Album was a visionary effort in that it was built with the “Next Track” button in mind.

If I were a press agent, and if it were up to me, I’d make the major announcement tomorrow – it’s the “One After 9/09″, get it?

I always liked that song better than “Revolution No. 9″ anyway…the White Album should have been pared down to one, solid, all-hit single album, instead of a double.

I think Neil’s point is a good one. I guess we’ll know soon enough. I have to have both box set regardless, of course. Mine are somewhere on the streets of San Francisco right now….

I don’t think Apple’s beyond putting them up as “Album only.” If they do that, where’s the downside?
